Second phase of consultation on new station plan for Halifax
January 5, 2022

Halifax stationA second phase of consultation on a new £27.1 million station building for Halifax is inviting public comment until January 16, 2022.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority is consulting on the plans which include a new two-storey station building.

An expanded car park is achieved through demolition of the old road bridge between town and station and its replacement with a new footbridge curving in the opposite direction. The plan also sees the reopening of an underpass beneath the station.

The 1855 grade II listed station building, recently used as an outbuilding of the Eureka children's museum, is not directly affected by the scheme, which builds on an expanded area from the present station building.

Before the reduced train usage of the Covid-19 pandemic, Halifax had risen to being the 10th busiest station in Yorkshire after Leeds, York, Sheffield, Huddersfield, Doncaster, the two Bradford stations, Wakefield Westgate and Hull. Halifax has West Yorkshire’s fifth-largest city or town population.

Halifax is a stop for Grand Central services between Bradford and London and for Northern services from Leeds via Bradford to Manchester and Chester; from York via Leeds and Bradford to Blackpool; and trains from Bradford to Brighouse and Huddersfield. Services from Hull via Leeds and Bradford also terminate at Halifax.

At the time of writing, the new station designs were to be found at this   WYCA - Halifax Railway Station web page.
