Flamborough
East Riding of Yorkshire
The village is at the centre of the Flamborough headland
where spectacular chalk cliffs, caves and coves form one of Yorkshire’s fine Heritage coasts and house one of the most important colonies of seabirds in Europe.
Flamborough Head is at the end of the headland, which is about two miles east of the village. It has an early 19th century active lighthouse and an old chalk tower from the 17th century which is the oldest full lighthouse remaining in the country.
In 1779, the Battle of Flamborough Head was fought off the coast between ships commanded by the United States of America against Royal Navy convoy escort vessels during the American War of Independence.
Just off Tower Street, near the centre of the village is Flamborough Castle. Today this consists of the remains of the 14th century chalk tower of a much larger fortified manor once owned by the Constable family. The ruins are a scheduled monument.
The village has ancient origins and the headland is a virtual island as a result of a 2.5-mile long ditch and bank defensive earthwork known as Dane’s Dyke across its landward western flank. Despite the name suggesting origins of Danish settlement, excavations suggest the earthwork has existed since the Bronze Age, a period around 3,000 to 4,000 years ago.
Although a headland mostly of high cliffs, it does have beaches at Thornwick Bay, North Landing, South Landing and Dane’s Dyke. The latter two have Keep Britain Tidy Seaside Awards.
Flamborough also has recent film and TV fame as a location for the 2016 film version of “Dad’s Army” and posing as the Isle of Wight in the ITV series “Victoria”.

Unitary authority

It does now cover a small part of the former West Riding, while it has lost portions of the historic East Riding to North Yorkshire and York.
Other towns in the East Riding include
The authority covers a near full range of council services, except the limited services handled by the various civil parish/town councils which exist throughout its area.
The 26 wards in the authority each elect one, two or three councillors to make up a 67 member council. An election for the entire council is held every four years with the most recent election in 2019.
