Scapegoat Hill

It is the highest village in the Huddersfield area at a height of more than 340 metres above sea level in places.

The village grew up around farming and hand-loom weaving and at one time had its own post office and Co‑op. These shops are now gone, but there is a farm shop at nearby Bolster Moor and the nearest village centre with shops is Golcar.

A Baptist Sunday School room was set up in High Street in the village in 1850 as an outpost of the earlier Baptist Church at Pole Moor. A Baptist Church was established in Scapegoat Hill in 1871 and the present building at the top of Chapel Street at its junction with School Road was built in 1899.

The late 1980s saw the building of a hotel at Nettleton Hill Road in Scapegoat Hill. The 31-bedroom hotel, complete with its own helicopter pad, became the Pennine Manor Hotel.
