Wakefield parliamentary by-election win for Labour June 24, 2022

Labour candidate Simon Robert Lightwood is the new MP for Wakefield after winning the parliamentary by-election there.

Fifteen candidates stood in the election on Thursday (June 23). Simon Lightwood took 47.9% of the vote to the 30.0% vote of second-placed Conservative candidate Nadeem Ahmed.

The election was due to the resignation of Imran Ahmad Khan, the Conservative elected as MP at the last parliamentary election. He was expelled from the party after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy in 2008 and later stood down as MP. He received an 18-month jail sentence.
