United Utilities' Dove Stone Reservoir at the edge of the Peak District near Greenfield on October 1The hosepipe ban applies to Yorkshire Water customers, covering most of Yorkshire, except in the far north of the region and some of the western borderlands of historic Yorkshire.

Northumbrian Water serves customers in those parts of Yorkshire in Redcar and Cleveland, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees and Durham County local authority districts and has not announced a hosepipe ban.

United Utilities serves North West England, including parts of historic Yorkshire in South Lakeland, Ribble Valley, Pendle and Oldham districts. While some of its Yorkshire reservoirs are extremely low, its customers are being urged to save water with no hosepipe ban in place.

Some of Yorkshire Water's reservoirs in the Pennines are particularly low. At Baitings Reservoir at the head of the Ryburn Valley, near Ripponden in West Yorkshire, the old road bridge across the valley, flooded when the reservoir was built, has been revealed below the new higher bridge. Other reservoirs are not as severely hit, but on average are 20% lower than normal for this time of year.

The drought has spurred Yorkshire Water into action to improve its network of pipes. On September 16 the company announced it had started laying temporary pipes to transfer water between Calderdale and the Worth Valley, where the water company is also applying for drought orders to reduce flow into rivers. When the pipes are in use the company says it will "monitor the success" and has not ruled out one day implementing a permanent solution.
