ELECTIONS 2022
Conservatives hung on to majority control at North Yorkshire County Council with just one seat more than the number needed to gain power. At the previous election (then with 72 seats) Conservatives had a 38 majority. They now have 47 seats out of 90, providing a majority of 4. The county authority will continue as a Unitary Authority as the government scraps the seven large district councils of North Yorkshire next year.
Lib Dems have won the other new Unitary Authority affecting part of Yorkshire. The new Westmorland and Furness unitary authority is a half-split of Cumbria incorporating three districts. It includes the South Lakeland district, which in 1974 swallowed up a part of the former West Riding of Yorkshire around Sedbergh.
