Rawthorpe

Bradley Mills Road, RawthorpeSt James Church and Parish Centre, RawthorpeRawthorpe is a district of Huddersfield near Dalton around 1 mile north-east of Huddersfield town centre (2 miles by road).

Before the building of an estate of council housing in the early 1930s, little existed of Rawthorpe other than farmland, the old Rawthorpe Hall and farm buildings and a few cottages.

Rawthorpe Lane was the road between Huddersfield and Kirkheaton, which was cut off as the large dye works expanded up the valley of Fenay Beck. It was also the junction of the road to Bradley Mills and marked on 19th century maps as Paradise Hill.

As a further estate of houses was built in the fields of Dalton it became increasing difficult to distinguish between the two districts and Rawthorpe continued to expand with schools and further blocks of housing, some having extensive views across the Colne Valley.
