Birchencliffe

Halifax Road, BirchencliffeBirchencliffe is around the busy A629 Halifax Road about two miles north-west of the town centre and not far from junction 24 of the M62 at nearby Ainley Top.

In the last 100 years the area has grown massively from a small hamlet of houses around the junction of Birchencliffe Hill Road and Halifax Road, near to which St Philip the Apostle Church, was built in 1877.

The area had become important in the 1820s when the Huddersfield to Halifax turnpike road was given a more direct route between Huddersfield town centre and Ainley Top than the 1770s route which ran through Grimescar Woods. One of the toll points on the new road was at Birchencliffe.

The area is mostly a residential district, but a number of small businesses are also now based in the area. There are pockets of woodland helping to divide Birchencliffe from Lindley to the south and some farmland remains to the north-east of the area.

For many years the area had its own pub, The Grey Horse, alongside Halifax Road, but this was demolished to make way for a supermarket's local store and a bakery chain shop.

There is also a Tesco Express and neighbouring bakery/sandwich shop at the site of the demolished Grey Horse pub, a Co-operative food store at the fuel service station and a convenience store at Weatherhill Road. Other business premises include car sales, van hire, an estate agent and a vet's surgery.
