The Shambles, York
York keeps its title as the best place to live in the North and North East of England in The Sunday Times Best Places to Live 2019.
While the overall UK prize which York won in 2018 has made a surprising move south to Salisbury in Wiltshire this year, the Yorkshire capital remains the regional winner throughout the North and North East.
The city, at one time the seat of the Emperor of Rome and later a historic Viking settlement, is no stranger to plaudits as it also emerged as Britain's favourite city with a huge 92% approval rating in a YouGov opinion poll last year.
Yorkshire contenders among the other North and North East places singled out by The Sunday Times include Beverley and Driffield in the East Riding, Boston Spa and Leeds city centre, both in the Leeds metropolitan district of West Yorkshire, the World Heritage Site village of Saltaire in the Bradford metropolitan district of West Yorkshire and Pateley Bridge, a small town at the heart of the Nidderdale area of outstanding beauty in North Yorkshire.
