Air travel

Airports in and around Yorkshire.

Yorkshire has two major airports, Leeds Bradford and Robin Hood, and there are others which are easy to reach just outside Yorkshire.

Allow plenty of time to reach the airport, particularly if travelling by car at peak times as there are sometimes congested sections of road along the way. Both the airports are near railways, but neither is connected to them. There are bus journeys connecting the airports to train stations in nearby towns and cities.

For general guidance, typical journey times are shown below based on the fastest routes when there are no delays. Additional time should be added to allow for any delays, particularly at peak commuter hours. Public transport times and journeys may differ on Sundays.

Leeds Bradford Airport

Leeds Bradford Airport is situated at Yeadon, about 7 miles north west of Leeds and about 6 miles north east of Bradford.

The airport originally opened as an aerodrome in 1931, but has since seen major expansion in its operations, now offering national, European, holiday destination and International flights from several operators and handling nearly 3.5m passengers a year.

There is no rail link to the airport, but regular bus services operate to Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate. The airport has premium, short, mid and long stay car parks all within 5 minutes walk or shuttle bus ride from the terminal. Prices for parking are shown on the airport website (see link below).

Robin Hood Airport (Doncaster)

Robin Hood Airport is at Finningley, which is around six miles south east of Doncaster.

The airport also styles itself Doncaster Sheffield Airport. Doncaster maybe, but Sheffield is 20 miles away (25 by road). There is now a regular X6 (previously 737) bus service between the airport and Sheffield city centre. It takes an hour or a liitle more. It is also possible to catch a bus into Doncaster, from where a train can be taken to Sheffield, although such a journey takes well over an hour.

Improvements have been made to road connections to the M18 motorway, but the airport wants its own station which would not be difficult to achieve as it is sandwiched between the East Coast Main Line and Doncaster-Lincoln line, both around a mile away. A station would provide much quicker access to most Yorkshire destinations and London King's Cross would only be around 1hr 30min away.

The airport offers flights mostly to Europe and to Mediterranean holiday destinations with some worldwide flight connections. The airport has premium, short and long stay car parks with a range of prices which can be found on the airport website (link below). The short stay car park offers free parking for up to 15 minutes.

Durham Tees Valley Airport

Although outside Yorkshire, Durham Tees Valley Airport, previously known as Teesside International Airport, is just across the River Tees and the closest option for large areas of North Yorkshire, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland. The airport is 3 miles west of Yarm, the nearest Yorkshire town, and 5 miles east south east of Darlington in County Durham. The airport is 9 miles from Middlesbrough and 12 miles from Northallerton, North Yorkshire. The city of Durham is 19 miles distant. The small airport, a former RAF base, opened in 1964. Amsterdam and Aberdeen are the principal destinations. The airport has its own rail station called Tees-side Airport, on the Stockton to Darlington line. The station is half-a-mile from the terminal building and despite a regular service passing through it, it is one of Britain's least used stations as only one Sunday train in each direction actually stops there. Dinsdale station is a regular train stop, 2 miles away, where bus route 12 links to the airport. The airport has car parking close to the terminal with up to 3 hours free. Other tariffs are shown on the airport website (link below).

Humberside Airport

South of the River Humber but with a road connection to East Yorkshire and Hull via the Humber Bridge (toll) is Humberside Airport at Kirmington, North Lincolnshire. Principal destinations from this small airport include Amsterdam, Aberdeen, Denmark, Bulgaria, Jersey, Majorca and Tenerife, but it also has a wide selection of seasonal holiday flights across Europe and also services North Sea gas platforms. Although a railway passes near the airport there is no station and the nearest rail connection is at Barnetby 3 miles away, from where there are trains to Doncaster and South Yorkshire. However, there is no direct bus link between the airport and this station. The Humber Flyer bus service from Cleethorpes and Grimsby via the airport continues via Barton upon Humber and across the Humber Bridge to the station at Hull, which offers rail services to other parts of Yorkshire. Car parking is available at the airport a short walk from the terminal with free parking for 15 minutes in the short stay car park. Turn up and park prices are displayed on the airport website (see link) with discounts promised for pre-booking.
